Aspheric lenses are a highly efficient way to correct for focus errors and other forms of optical problems inherent in common spherical lens designs. A key benefit is that Aspheric lenses correct for spherical aberration which causes incoming light rays at the outer edge of the lens to focus at different points from light passing through the center, resulting in a blur or loss of resolution. Comparatively, Aspheric lenses are designed to focus light rays from the center throughout the edges to a more compact point, effectively removing blur and creating improved image quality. An aspheric lens can also help eliminate the need for multiple spherical lenses within an optical system. Traditional lens system designs compensate for aberrations by utilizing several elements. A single Aspheric lens with its aberration compensating properties can oftentimes replace several spherical lenses within a lens system. Given each surface of each element in an optical system reduces light gathering capabilities due to reflection loss, a single element will increase the speed or efficiency to collect light. Eliminating the need for multiple spherical lenses will also result in a smaller, lighter weight system, and potentially lower overall cost.
